  • 1 in 4 People Online Use Social Networking

The Consumer Internet Barometer just released findings collected from a survey of 10,000 households across the country that tracks who's doing what on the internet.

They found social-interaction platforms, such as top-ranked MySpace and Facebook, have grown dramatically in recent years, with one out of every four people online now visiting social-networking sites.

    Some of the findings:

    • About half of social networkers visit social-networks sites on a daily basis - and half of them say they log on several times a day.

    • Women are more likely to frequent social networking sites than men; in general, women use the internet more than men for personal communication.

    • The number-one reason cited by the vast majority of online consumers - at least four out of five - for visiting social networking sites is to be able to connect with friends.

    • At least one out of five social network users log on to blog or meet new people.

    • Among the 30 and over working-age population, one out of eight uses social networking sites to conduct business.

Online social networking is an integral part of many people’s lives and a natural extension of our means of communication which the internet has created. The next growth wave will be expanding and incorporating these networks into our business lives.

  • Getting Baby Boomers Involved

At least 6 percent of Americans between the ages of 44 and 70, or 5.3 million people, are working in second careers with charities, governments, schools, or other institutions that benefit society, according to a new survey.

Furthermore, another survey found 36% of people 50 and older said their social activism has increased since they began participating in online communities for social causes.

This is a huge talent pool looking for purpose-driven jobs that provide them with both means and meaning.  This is a potential blessing to nonprofits needing more people with skill, experience and passion to carry out their mission.

According to the report, most respondents who are interested in encore careers are worried that these positions may be hard to find and may not meet their needs.

Common concerns of people looking to get involved

    • 8 in 10 expressed concern about having the flexibility to take time off

    • A majority were worried about having adequate income and benefits

    • 1 in 3 were worried about the need to learn new technologies and skills or go back to school for certifications

    • 1 in 3 expressed concern about the loss of seniority or status
